This
show's been a long time coming, and is overdue, as I've never devoted
an entire show to Queercore, Homocore, gay punk, or whatever you choose
to call it
and those are elusive terms at best. Jon Ginoli was the
catalyst. I've been a long-time fan of Pansy Division and last January
when I heard that there would be a new CD, new film and Jon's book all
released together this Spring, I knew this was the time. Fortunately Jon's
book tour made a stop in Houston in May,
so I was able to cajole him to stop by my house for an extensive interview. And last January I also sounded out my friend Larry Bob, of HolyTitclamps.com, on the project, and he's been of immense help in recommending artists and songs (and providing songs) and on gee, what is queercore? He knew of my fascination with the JD's Top Ten Homocore Hit Parade Tape, and got me in contact with GB Jones, who graciously agreed to an interview about the tape, and JD's the zine she and Bruce LaBruce created that sparked the genre of Queercore and of course her pioneering band Fifth Column. And for everyone who's ever researched Queercore and learned about that famous JD's Tape, well, this is their chance to hear every song that appeared on it, and many more featured in the zine during its 6-year run. It took five segments to do justice to the interviews with Jon and GB, but I could not stop there. There are three more focusing on, if you will, the core of Queercore the bands that came out in the early 90s, some later bands and early influences. Of course the choices are subjective, but having the bulk of the show as internet-only allowed me the chance to do what I could never to on my broadcast show, to not worry about the language that gives punk music its spirit and joy. Oh,
yeah, the background graphic is a real page from JD's zine, with some
additional graphics. |
Jon Ginoli was the founder of Pansy Division and Part 1 starts off with the radio version of the interview, and Parts 2 & 3 continue, talking about all those songs I just cannot play on broadcast radio. Parts 4 to 6 are Queercore in general, and Part 5 starts the GB Jones interview, digging deep into the story of JD's zine and the queer punk music. Part 6 wraps it up with GB talking about the band Fifth Column. Of course additional pages are featured, showing photos of the artists and recordings for the different sections. |
And,
as there are so many artists on this show, instead of a separate Links
section
I'm providing their site links, if known, as links to their names on the playlists. |
