The
National March on Washington
For Lesbian & Gay Rights,
October 14, 1979

Okay,
yes I know this is not music related, but since these pics are part
of our gay & lesbian
history, I wanted to share them. In 1979 I was living in Norfolk,
Virginia, and at the time
I was editor of the local gay newspaper, "Our Own Community Press."
I feel blessed that
I did this role during the time of the March, as I went to it, with
my Norfolk friends, with a
special desire to take lots of photos, to "cover" it for
the newspaper. Some are of Norfolk
folks, mostly not. All photos are by me except where indicated. Hope
you enjoy them...
New
Addition: As I was Editor I still have copies of all the issues of
the newspaper
leading up to the March, and have scanned every article from that
year.

There
was a record album associated with the MOW...
it was mostly clips from the speeches from both the
March and the Gay Freedom Train that crossed
the country on its way there

Jayr
Ellis, one of Norfolk's greatest gay leaders

I must have found the L.A. Gay Freedom Band quite
photogenic, got three of them.

The guy above got his photo taken a lot.

[above 5 images scanned from Our Own, as opposed
to the photos, so lesser quality, sorry]

These
two photos (acquired June 2019 courtesy Cathleen Rhodes, taken by
Marge Reed.
Above John Gula (coat with fur collar), behind him Dr Bob Scott, front
row
Ruth Peele (clapping hands) next to another Ruth, behind them Joe
Amos and Fred Osgood.
The woman next to Ruth Peele is Ruth Dreamdigger, who was a keynote
speaker at our
L/G Conference earlier that year. She came out when she was a grandmother!
Below, yes, that's JD from behind...looks like I had just taken a
photo of that Norfolk group and was returning camera

and,
finally, me....most of these pics were used in our newspaper in a
collage,
I decided then it was time to use my own pic, as sort of a coming-out
statement,
another step along the road...

And, this is the only
pic from the March I took from the net. The photographer (from Flickr)
is just
credited as RamDriver. That's Jayr Ellis in the front left ,and I
think it might be me with the
sunglasses above the letter SB in Lesbians, dunno...:)

More
Norfolk......
Below, I believe it
was my idea to feature in this Norfolk area bar guide, actual photos
of the bars, glad I did.

I
am sure it would be hard to find on the internet photos of these Norfolk
area bars:
The Continental
The Cue
The Ghent Society
The Late Show
Mickey's
Nickelodeon
Nutcracker
Oar House
Paddock
Shirley's
And,
I recently found a copy of Ciao Magazine, from October 1973. To my
mind their best practice
was doing features on the bars in different cities, with actual photos
of the bars. I'm glad
to share their Norfolk feature.
